American X History Tour of Miami
Feb 23, 2025
From: 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM
Trace the footsteps of a legendary athlete's transformation from Olympic champion to cultural icon through the historic streets of Miami and Miami Beach. The American X History Tour of Miami: Walk & Roll Fun Run, taking place Sunday, February 23 from 6:00 to 11:00 a.m., follows Cassius Clay's journey during the winter of 1964, when he trained for his first heavyweight title fight against Sonny Liston.
Beginning at The Historic Hampton House, a former Green Book hotel that welcomed Black travelers during the era of segregation, participants will explore the oak-lined streets of Brownsville, including a stop at Ali's first Miami home. The route continues through Wynwood, across scenic Venetian Causeway, and concludes at the Miami Beach Convention Center, where Clay claimed his first professional title.
This cultural walking and running tour illuminates a pivotal moment in American sports history, when Clay, who would soon become Muhammad Ali, navigated the complexities of Jim Crow segregation while training at Angelo Dundee's 5th Street Gym. Following the tour, participants are invited to a complimentary coffee and conversation session at the Convention Center's Rum Room Restaurant, followed by an optional hour-long Hall of Fame Tour at 10:00 a.m.
Transportation assistance is available with bus service beginning at 6:00 a.m. from the Miami Beach City Hall parking garage. Donations are welcomed to support both the event costs and the preservation of The Historic Hampton House, now operating as a museum that commemorates this significant chapter in Miami's cultural heritage.
